Despite the growing focus on blockchain in the Philippines, gaps persist in students' understanding and practical application of the technology, according to Filipino-led edutech firm Bitskwela.

In the world of chess, age is no barrier to success, and the amazing victory of a 70-year-old in the recently held Chess tournament in the city of Sto. Tomas, Batangas is further proof of this.

The said tournament commemorates the International Chess Day organized by the City Youth Development and Sports Division in partnership with CoinEx as part of their corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives, in the City of Sto. Tomas last 20th of July.

“CoinEx takes immense pride in fostering community activities,” company representatives said, “and we’re committed to showcasing the positive impact crypto can have on our daily lives.”

It was participated by forty individuals aged 16 and above and competed for a total of ₱10,000 cash prize which includes a trophy, certificate and jacket. Aside from the mentioned prizes, CoinEx also held a raffle of chessboards, crypto tokens and merchandise to all the participants.

The local government fully supports the chess tournament through the leadership of Mayor Atty. Arth Jhun Aguilar Marasigan, along with Vice Mayor Catherine Jaurigue-Perez, City Council Member and City Administrator Engr. Severino Medalla that improves the academic performance, concentration, sportsmanship and creativity of the Tomasinos.

One of the winners of the said tournament is Sonny Bumanlag, 70 years old, resident of Brgy 2 in the Ciity of Sto Tomas.

Despite fierce competition from younger players, 70-year-old Sonny Bumanlag participated in the said Chess tournament. Doubts about his chances against his younger rivals were quickly dispelled after he displayed unparalleled mental acuity and calm demeanor under pressure.

At the end of the tournament, Sonny Bumanlag wins the 1st Runner Up and Justin Blaise Japsay, a resident of Sta Anastacia city of Sto Tomas, became the champion. Among the winners are Tristan Santillano (2nd Runner Up), Nielmar Bumanlag (3rd Runner Up) and Joaquin Salonoy (4th Runner Up).

Sonny brought home P3,000 Pesos, Trophy, Certificate and CoinEx Jacket.

The champion Justin Japsay got P5,000 Pesos, Trophy, Certificate and CoinEx Jacket. Other winners also took home cash prizes and certificates.

The remarkable achievement of the 70-year-old chess player will surely leave a fond memory in the entire Chess community in the city of Sto Tomas. It reminds that with dedication, persistence, and love for the game, anything is possible.
