Despite the growing focus on blockchain in the Philippines, gaps persist in students' understanding and practical application of the technology, according to Filipino-led edutech firm Bitskwela.

Holy Angel University’s School of Computing (SOC) proudly hosted the First Regional Blockchain Conference 2024, drawing a diverse group of speakers, experts, and blockchain enthusiasts from across the region. The event aimed to explore the transformative potential of blockchain technology and its various applications.

The day began with a solemn invocation, followed by the national anthem and the Holy Angel University Hymn, setting a tone of unity and reverence. Dr. Al D. Biag, Vice President for Academic Affairs (VPAA), officially opened the conference with a compelling speech on the significance of blockchain technology in today’s world. His remarks underscored the relevance of the conference and the university’s commitment to technological advancement.

Mr. Leopoldo Jaime N. Valdes, the Officer-in-Charge University President, delivered the welcome remarks. He expressed his enthusiasm for the event and highlighted Holy Angel University’s role in fostering innovation and professional growth in emerging technologies.

The conference was chaired by Dr. Arcely Napalit and co-chaired by Dr. Joseph Esquivel. The event was made possible with the help of the SOC College Student Council, the dedicated faculties and staff of the School of Computing, and the officers of the Cybersecurity Intelligence Alliance, who managed the LED wall and presentations. Access Point provided comprehensive coverage of the entire event, ensuring that key moments and insights were captured and shared.

The morning session featured an impressive lineup of speakers:

Rochelle Ferrer discussed the “Social Impact of Web3,” shedding light on how decentralized technologies can empower communities.

Patrik Ferrer emphasized “The Importance of Web3 Community Management and Moderation,” stressing effective governance in decentralized networks.

Representatives from BitGet introduced the “Blockchain for Youth” initiative, focusing on the contributions of young innovators.

Trexia Olaya presented on “Fintech Beyond Digitalization,” exploring blockchain’s role in financial technologies.

Emmanuel Samson provided insights into “Blockchain in the Philippines,” highlighting local advancements.

Nelson Lumbres concluded the morning session with “History of Web3, Emerging Trends, and the Internet Computer Protocol,” offering a comprehensive overview of blockchain’s evolution.

After a lunch break, the conference continued with:
Stephen Guasch, who spoke on “Web3 Games and Opportunities,” exploring blockchain’s potential in gaming.

Henry James Banayat discussed “Empowering Education and Digital Careers with Current Emerging Technologies,” highlighting blockchain’s educational applications.

Patricia Arro captivated the audience with “Polkadot: The Largest DAO Globally, is More Than Just a Blockchain,” exploring decentralized autonomous organizations.

Theo Roque addressed “Data Provenance and Permanence: Solving Today’s Data Challenges with Arweave and AO Computer,” focusing on data integrity solutions.

Eliezer Rabadon discussed “Internet Computer: What Things Can You Now Build on Blockchain?” providing practical insights.

The day concluded with closing remarks from Dr. Marlon I. Tayag, Dean of the School of Computing, who praised the event’s success and its impact on promoting blockchain education.

Two breakout sessions were also held from 01:00 pm to 04:00 pm:
Session 1: “Deploying Your Portfolio on the Internet Computer”
by ICP HUB PH, offering practical guidance.
Session 2: “Blockchain for Youth,” engaging the younger
generation in blockchain technology.

Hosted by Ms. Avigail P. Magbag and Ms. Ma. Louella M. Salenga, the conference was supported by PDAX, BitGet, Polkadot, Web3 Bulacan, Layer Zero, SJCAM, DvCode, and ICP HUB PH. The First Regional Blockchain Conference 2024 set a high standard for future events, leaving a lasting impact on all participants.
